Development of Poor and Marginalized Families

  • Working with 580 Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in 260 villages and 55 slums, with a membership of more than 6000 women form poor families. These SHGs not only manage the micro-finance activities, but also take-up various credit plus activities. The total savings in these SHGs is Rs.55 Lakhs. Around Rs.60 Lakhs loan/subsidies were mobilized from financial institutions and government departments.
  • A Family Counseling Center is managed at Gubbi, Tumkur District wherein 83 family dispute cases and 81 alcoholism cases were studied and rehabilitation measures were adopted. Conducted awareness on social evils like problems surrounding to dowry and superstitious practices.
  • Two SHGs federations were formed. These federations are active providing forward and backward support services for the member SHGs in addressing various socio-economic issues of women, children and the community.

Rescue and Rehabilitation of Children

  • Identified and released more than 3000 working children and re-integrated them successfully to mainstream schools. Currently 150 released working children are studying in bridge schools/tent schools/day care centers that are financially supported by the government and European donor agencies.

    • Four Eevening schools are run at Jamakandi Taluk, Bagalkot for school drop outs, released working children and children at risk. Abhivruddi is creating awareness among parents of these children and their village community members for defending child rights through advocacy.

  • Sixty Four Girl children, who were subjected to slavery, sexual abuse, trafficking and harassment, has been rescued and rehabilitated with the support services and participation of local bodies, community and the like minded organizations.

Environment, Resources and Sustainable Development

  • Sustainable agricultural practices promoted through demonstration of organic farming in the working villages. Demonstration model plots were developed in selected villages with the support of government and other institutions.   
  • National watershed programmes (DPAP) and World Bank assisted Sujala Watershed Project has been implemented in 101 villages of GUBBI taluk, Tumkur district covering 15,153 hectares of land. Soil Water conservation works like earthen / boulder bunding, boulder checks, rubble checks, waste weirs, nala bunds, check dams, rooftop rainwater harvesting, etc., forestry, horticulture, livestock, income generation activities for promoting livelihoods of the landless and marginal families were planned and implemented in these villages.

  • Implemented World Bank assisted Community Based Tank Management Project in Koratagere taluk, Tumkur district in 28 villages covering 30 Tanks. Different activities such as feeder canal treatment and forestry in catchment area, tank boundary fixing, desiltation, bund strengthening, bund revetment, sluice repairs / reconstruction, waste weirs repairs / reconstruction in tank bed area, canal line treatment in command areas, income generation activities for the landless and marginal families, were implemented in those villages.
  • Organization has hosted / conducted / participated in number of district and state level seminars and workshop relating to women, children, natural resources, Notional Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), Food security, Panchayati Raj system, Sustainable agriculture, etc.

Networking in Federations

  • At present Abhiruddi is a State Convener for Campaign Against Child Labour -Karnataka (CACL-K), an effective forum for campaigning and lobbying for total reduction of child labour in all the sectors and to secure rights of the children, with an active participation of hundreds of NGOs, progressive forums, mass based forums, unions, students, SHG federations, intellectuals and other concerned institutions.
  • Organization is the Convener of Tumkur district NGOs network with 25 NGOs active membership.

Future Plans

Abhivruddi intends to strengthen its existing works and also broad base its reach to the people. It has plans to initiate development projects and campaign related activities in Northeastern and Northwestern parts of Karnataka, especially on Health, Education, Watershed, NREGA, SHG formation, Environment related projects.
